Crochet, garland, summer decorating

Summer is an inferno the likes of which you have never known if you haven’t visited Louisiana between May and October. Have no fear, my friends. I’m here to add festivity and cheer in spite of the heat! My solution? A patriotic garland to spruce up the interior, which is where I will spend this Memorial Day.

I created this gem a couple of years ago, but it took me a while to actually write down the pattern. You know how I am. *sigh*

Pattern (which is also linked to Ravelry):

11 fabric 1×3” rectangle “stripes”
Red, white, blue worsted weight yarn (remnants)
Size 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook

Stars (make 8 each in red, white, blue)

ch 6, sl st in first ch to make a loop
ch 1, dc in ring
*ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 2, dc in loop*
Repeat from * to * 3 more times
ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 2, sl st in 1st dc
(total of 5 “points”)

Garland (use white yarn)

ch 21, sl st into 1st ch st to create a loop
*ch 10, sl st into one point of a red star (to attach star to chain)
ch 10, sl st into one point of a white star
ch 20, sl st into one point of a blue star
ch 10, sl st into one point of a red star
ch 20, sl st into one point of white star
ch 10, sl st into one point of blue star
ch 20, sl st into one point of red star
ch 10, sl st into one point of a white star
ch 20, sl st into one point of a blue star*
Continue pattern from * to * until all stars are attached. (You will finish on a blue star.)
ch 21, sl st into 11th ch from hook to create a loop
Finish off.

Stripes

Using crochet hook, slide a fabric “stripe” into the 11th ch from 1st white star. Do this for all spaces of ch 20.

Makes a garland of approximately 87.5 inches.

Now you have a very festive garland for summer!

XOXO,
Stacy
