Being kept for someone is a painful thing. Being kept from someone hurts two people, not just one.
When Jane’s Addiction released I Would for You back in 1987, it had a different meaning to me from the meaning it has now, in 2025. I was a young college graduate and newlywed in 1987. I am a grandmother now, and all the life I had experienced up to that point – both pain and pleasure – when I was still a young dreamer pales in comparison to the fullness of everything in the universe now that I see the whole picture. She opened my crazy eyes to that everything. And I would do anything for her, if I could.
I Would for You
I’m so tired.
The Man from the government;
The Man from the tax board;
The Man in the public school;
The Man owns the golden rule.
I’m everybody’s slave.
I made you my slave.
You said, “This I do for you.”
If it would help to give the world back
what it gave, then I would.
I would, I would, I would,
I would for you. I would for you.
You say my eyes are crazy eyes.
Sometimes they are, and so are you,
And if you wonder what I would do –
I would do anything, if I could.
You know I would.
I would, I would, I would.
I would for you. I would for you. I would for you.
I miss you, Beautiful. If I could do anything for you, you know I would.
