Raising Hare is a beautiful story that illustrates how a phoenix can rise from the ashes. In 2020 the world was paused during the covid-19 pandemic, including that of Chloe Dalton. As a result, she left the bustling arena of world politics to settle and work online at her English country cottage. That’s when she discovered a leveret hiding on the road. This serendipitous event – for both of them – widened Dalton’s world beyond anything her globetrotting could do.
I loved this story for so many reasons. It became a comforting part of my matins in view of a bayou sunrise when I was transported across the Atlantic Ocean to another quiet place that differed from yet paralleled my being in countless ways. It is so well written and precise that I became a keen observer of the hare’s life, too. I learned about the journey of one hare and her leverets and how an open heart and mind can lead us to extraordinary discoveries that might have been altogether missed if we drown in the noise of modern industrialized society.
But Raising Hare is not just a behest to slow down. It’s an invitation to explore, learn, and grow. It’s an awakening of sorts – to use our newfound knowledge to enhance the world, not to mold it. How beautiful the world could be for everyone, if only.
Five stars for the hare and the story about her that needed to be told.
